MBABANE – After a stunning performance in South Africa this past weekend, local boxers in Thabiso Dlamini and Zweli Dlamini have shifted focus to the Zone 4 games.

The two competed in the South African National Boxing Organisation (SANABO)-hosted International Open Boxing Tournament with three countries as there was also Mauritius.

Zweli did enough to bring gold while Thabiso got silver.
Zweli fought against Mauritius first, won on points and went on to beat a South African for the gold medal.
Thabiso, on the other hand, played against a two-time Olympian, Clair Merven, and lost.

The tournament was staged at the Transnet Engineering Boxing Academy in Silverton, Tshwane.
The boxers are back in the country.  Both said they had an amazing experience during the tournament.

“All I can say is that it was a great experience since I fought with someone who had participated in the Olympics.
I am very happy with the achievement since I won the last round and Merven also came to me and said he respected me so I would like to thank the country for giving me this opportunity to represent the country,” said the boxer.

He then highlighted that his next target was the Zone 4 games in Botswana and then qualifiers which are African championships to be held in June.
Zweli shared similar sentiments.

“It was a great practice because I got to fight one of the best, a Mauritania boxer and the South African boxer and winning against them really boosted my confidence. It also helped me to identify where I need to improve before the Zone 4 games that will be in Botswana,” said Zweli.

The duo is under the Scholarship Olympic Solidarity programme which enables them to participate during international tournaments.
