MANZINI – The Eswatini Schools Sports Association (ESSA) has warned schools to refrain from using muti (juju) during schools’ ball games.

The strong message from the ESSA comes after their special meeting which was held at Salesian High School yesterday. Interviewed after the gathering, the association’s PRO Victor ‘Mavikana’ Dlamini yesterday said it was a cause for concern among other issues which were addressed during the meeting. Other issues that were discussed include the 2019 calendar, briefing on COSSASA games and age-cheating.

“The members of the association are worried about the rise of muti usage during the schools’ ball games. The meeting resolved that schools which use muti during games should be dealt with accordingly. We strongly discourage the use of muti during these games. The objective of these games is to groom future leaders so it does not bode well when the scholars are exposed to muti,” Dlamini said.

He also highlighted that age-cheating was rife during the track and field competitions.
“We warn teachers to ensure that they do not allow athletes that are over the stipulated age. This is unfair to the participants who follow the rules,” he said.
Those in attendance were also encouraged to take part in the upcoming track and field competitions.

“It is vital for schools to be part of these games because it does not only promote fitness and health but also allow the scholars to explore their talent,” he added.
He also highlighted the meeting was a great success as there were more schools that attended.

According to the PRO, over 300 were in attendance. Meanwhile, this newspaper has reported on muti usage before from the schools ball games especially in the schools based in the countryside.
