SIMUNYE – He has aced the first half marathon of the new year. That is Mthobisi Ntshingila, who outclassed 57 other runners who participated in the half marathon of the Hlane Resolution Run yesterday.

He shook off strong contender Brian Marx to win the fifth edition of the annual race which started and finished at Lusoti inside the Hlane Royal National Park. Ntshingila finished the race in 01:27:05 hours. The runner-up arrived after 5:37 minutes.

Despite winning the race, the Lobamba-based runner did not break last year’s record which was set by Swazi Slojos’ Sifiso Ngcobo, who clocked 01:10:19 hours.

The duo was tied for the better part of the race but Marx lost steam 5km towards the end of the race.
“I am happy that I won the race today. It’s a big achievement for me, considering that last year I came second in the 10km,” Ntshingila said.

“I was confident that I would win because I had trained hard for this race. I used to run and cover a distance of 30km and I am glad that the hard work paid off. The route was perfect although it was rocky, which somehow contributed to me not beating last year’s record,” said the 32-year-old.

In the ladies category Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) athlete Winile Mnisi continued to dominate as she won the race in 01:41:41 hours. Despite emerging as the winner, she could not beat her previous record of 01:35:59 hours. Coming second was Priscilla Mamba in 01:44:00 hours. Tanille Murton completed the top three with a time of 02:04:43 hours.

Shinning in the male 10km was Lusito Shabangu with an improved time of 34:44 minutes while REPS’ Sebenele Shabalala beat last year’s record set by Golden Foot Club’s Nelisiwe Maziya by 10:18 minutes. She finished the race in 45:09 minutes.

Aaron Ndzimandze was the winner of the 5km male category after he clocked 22:45 minutes while Nothando Masilela did not only win this in the female category, but she managed to beat her personal best she set last year. She finished the race in improved 23:56 minutes.
