MHLUME – The wait continues for Mbabane Highlanders and Vovovo FC.

Referee Mbongiseni Fakudze had to call off the dramatic Ingwenyama Cup Last 16 game yesterday at Nsukuwansuku Stadium in Mhlume following a power blackout with the score goalless.

The match officials had to wait for about 20 minutes after the blackout at 65 minutes before a decision was taken to call off the game.
Interestingly, the lights were back on immediately after referee Fakudze blew his whistle to signal the abandonment of the match.
This is after they had a short discussion with all the match officials and the teams’ captains in Highlanders’ Xolani ‘Chocco’ Sibandze and Vovovo’s Mancoba Mavimbela.

dramatic

Meanwhile, it proved to be a dramatic fixture both on and off the fixture.
A brawl broke out during the teams’ entrance into the stadium.
Highlanders were the first to enter and Vovovo followed.
The chaos started after Highlanders’ marshals and supporters accused Vovovo of intending to walk past the team into the dressing rooms while Highlanders were the first to enter into the stadium.

Police had difficulty trying to control the situation.
Police from the Operational Support Service Unit (OSSU) had to be called for backup in putting the chaotic situation under control.
One Vovovo fan was escorted by the police as Highlanders’ fans bayed for his blood for trespassing on their side of the stadium.

frustrate

The Motshane-based outfit were out there to frustrate Highlanders and thought they had found the opener through Celumusa Dlamini in as early as the second minute, but their celebrations were cut short since the referee flagged for an offside.
Landers also created good scoring opportunities as Sabelo ‘Sawa’ Gamedze had his header collected by Vovovo goalkeeper, Njabulo Sambo.
The Sihlangu player connected a superb Peter Dlamini delivery on the right flank.

‘Chocco’ threatened Vovovo will his long range efforts particularly in the second stanza.
The capital city giants continued putting pressure on Vovovo’s defence.

A long range effort from ‘Chocco’ at the edge of the box saw Vovovo keeper punching the ball off and Thabiso Mokenkoane was just a second late for a rebound finish off as Vovovo keeper recovered to collect.
Following the setback, the game is expected is to be replayed on date to be determined by the tournament Management Committee.
