MBABANE – The Zakhele Ladies Volleyball team is celebrating a podium finish from an invitational tournament in neighbouring South Africa.

After cruising in the round robin matches in Ladysmith, which is a city at UThukela District of Kwazulu-Natal; the Manzini-based side managed to grind out a 2-1win in the third place play-offs against hosts Team 7 to claim bronze. The game was played two days ago, which was the final day of the three-day tournament.

Confirming the results was Team Treasurer Mandisa Sigudla, who disclosed that Eswatini’s other representatives Bob Cats could not go beyond the quarter-finals.
“It was a good outing.

“The team deserves credit for standing their ground against tough opposition. We’re indebted to all our partners and sponsors for support,” said Sigudla.
At least eight lady teams participated in the tournament and they included Hambanathi from Johannesburg and Sparten. The former beat Zakhele in the semi-finals.

The team, which is said to have sponsored itself, returned yesterday. However, there was assistance from the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs, Eswatini National Volleyball Association (ENVA) and Mr Matata. They got E700 instead of the bronze medals.
