MBABANE – Giant slayers Vovovo FC were at it again.

First, they beat Mbabane Swallows and yesterday, the Motshane based outfit surprised Manzini Sundowns after they beat the hub giants 1-0 here. An impressive showing for the sky-blue outfit as the win elevated them from 10th position to the 6th position in the MTN Premier League log. This is after they have completed all 13 games of the first round and parade 16 points after four wins, four draws and five defeats. They appeared the stronger side and created more scoring opportunities immediately after referee, Celumusa Siphepho, blew his whistle to signal the start of the game. Four minutes into the game, Vovovo showed their intentions and youngster, Leon Manyisa set to leave for Real Madrid’s development in Spain, had his free kick just inches above the woodwork. Vovovo continued to attack and Sundowns committed more fouls as they tried to defend, allowing the opposition more set pieces which proved to be threatening for the visitors.

Beat

Few minutes before the quarter-hour mark, Siphosethu Mabilisa, almost beat Sundowns keeper from a free kick near the centre line. Msawakhe Mncwango was equal to the task as he opted to tip it over the cross bar to force for a corner. Finally, Vovovo’s Mcolisi Tsabedze found the back of the net for the home team a few minutes later after an inviting Menzi ‘Chicken’ Shabangu through ball but Vovovo’s celebrations were short-lived as referee Siphepho ruled for an off-side. Vovovo could still not find the target at the half-hour mark as they failed to convert despite creating numerous opportunities. The referee had to issue a yellow card to Sundowns’ Reagan Kangu as the visiting side started to be physical. Julius Chakupewu tried a few changes even before the breather as it was obvious things were not going their way. He took out Mlondi Mamba for Mfundo Matsebula.

After the breather, Vovovo picked off from where they left and scored a minute into the second half. A long range effort from ‘Chicken’ was too much for Mncwango to handle, the keeper tried to make a save but the ball slipped from his hands to slowly roll and kiss the back of the net as he helplessly watched it laid down. Sundowns’ real scoring chance came a few minutes after the start of the second half and Vovovo goalie, Njabulo Sambo calmly collected Sibonginkhosi Dlamini ‘set piece.
Both coaches made changes as Vovovo’s Gcina ‘Magiyane’ Dlamini tried to maintain the lead and Chakupewu trying to find the equaliser. The game finished with the home team collecting all three points at the end of the first round.
