MANZINI – Seasoned sports administrator and TZD Athletics Club Chairman Zakhele Dlamini has stepped into the shoes of resigned AAS President Gideon Mthembu, albeit temporarily.

The Mthembu-led board of one of Eswatini’s priority sports bodies, Athletics Association of Swaziland, resigned en masse following alleged pressure from clubs during last Saturday’s Annual General Meeting at OlympAfrica Sports Development Centre in Lobamba.

The resigned committee succumbed to pressure following reported flouting of the association’s constitution.
The concerns by membership were headlined by reported failure by the executive to hold a semi-annual general meeting by June this year, as per the dictates of the constitution.

It is during this meeting where items like the financial report are tabled. Instead, the financial report had been brought for presentation in last Saturday’s annual general meeting and was rejected by the members.
Following the drama, a four-member interim committee made up of experienced administrators and coaches have been appointed by the membership to keep the fire burning.

Chairing the interim structure is Zakhele Dlamini, who is also former Premier League of Swaziland (now Eswatini) CEO. He is being assisted by Mbabane Athletics Club’s Harry Malindzisa. Top Manzini Athletics Club coach Muzi Mabuza and Deli Simelane from the University of Eswatini complete the list of the members of the normalising committee.

Dlamini, alongside Mabuza and Malindzisa, assured stakeholders, partners, and sponsors that things would soon be normal, as they were facilitating the ushering in of a new board.
They were speaking during a press conference at The George Hotel in Manzini. The resigned board members who included vice president Selby Shongwe, had been in office for two years. Their term of office was going to expire in 2020.

“We’re not messiahs, but we’re serving the sport to push the demands of the members.  At times in business, there are challenges, but it is not the end of the world. We will still need the assistance of the resigned board members, as they remain part of the athletics family,” said Dlamini.

Meanwhile, one of the concerns that led to the turmoil during the AGM was the belated release of the notice of the general assembly.  It was dated November 12, 2018. The constitution calls for its release at least 27 days earlier.a
