IT’S GREEN MAMBA’S 1ST ROUND TITLE TO LOSE

My dearest readers .......... “Only the best team wins the league,” once remarked the best manager of his generation, Manchester United’s Sir Alex Ferguson. No one would have put it with such alluring clarity than the Scot whose 13 league title haul makes him the most successful manager in the Barclay’s Premier League.

As Caleb Ngwenya’s Green Mamba bask in the impending first round success following the 4-0 mauling of Manzini Sundowns on Saturday at Somhlolo National Stadium, there is no doubt when the curtain falls on the first round of the 2018/19 MTN league, the ribbons on the league trophy will be green and white.

Following a minor slump which culminated in two defeats against Mbabane Highlanders and Malanti Chiefs, the ‘Correctional Services’ side has responded with the gusto and verve expected of a team that deserves to wear the crown as the winners of the Holy Grail of local football. During the two successive defeats, this column, the State-of-the-Nation-Sports-Address (SONSA), was adamant that Caleb Ngwenya’s charges had done enough to win the first round crown. This column stated categorically clear that they could not be a bad team overnight. The seven straight wins made them champions-elect, in particular, as the other title challengers were being inconsistent with each passing week.

Massacre

The 4-0 massacre of inconsistent Manzini Sundowns has fully demonstrated Green Mamba’s title credentials and a win against Tambuti FC in their next league will confirm that they have dethroned Mbabane Swallows as first round champions. By the look of things, nothing will stop the ‘Correctional Services’ side pressing on to lift the coveted league title come May next year.

Yes, it is early days. Yes, there are still 15 more games to play, but Green Mamba has been rampant and resolute this season. They have scored MORE goals (25) and conceded the least (6) – same as Royal Leopard – and for good measure, they have won more games and have drawn neither. The two successive defeats are the only blot in their copybook this season.

This shows growth in stature for the ‘Correctional Services’ side who last won a league title in the 2009-10 season under the tutelage of the dearly departed Francis ‘Mkhulu’ Banda.

Swallows’ shocking 1-0 loss to Malanti Chiefs has mathematically ruled them out of the first round crown contention while Young Buffaloes, Mbabane Highlanders and Royal Leopard may still harbour some hopes of catching up with Green Mamba.

But this grandson of Mlonyeni wants to put his gizzard-like-head on the chopping board and declare without fear of contradiction that the ribbons on the oval-shaped MTN league trophy will be GREEN and WHITE when the first round ends in the next three weeks!
Congratulations in advance Caleb Ngwenya and your boys! Luma Nyoka!
