MBABANE - The journey for the 2019 AFCON Under-23 begins this Friday for the U-23 National team.

The head coach, Sifiso ‘Nuro’ Ntibane, said they were ready for the tournament as they have been hard at training.

The U-23 local side will clash with Mozambique on Friday in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in Zimpeto Stadium and kick-off time is 6pm. Participating nations have to overcome three two-legged qualifying stages and battle it out with 30 countries that will be in action in the first round of the qualifiers.
Defending champions, Nigerian and 13 other nations, are exempted from the qualifying stages.

Some of these countries are Algeria, Congo, Ivory Coast, Gabon, Mali, Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Qualification

The games will also be used as qualification for the Olympic Games as the top three in the regional showpiece set for November 8-22 next year in Egypt will automatically qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

This will be a debut participation for the local side since inception. They will visit Mozambique tomorrow and play then on Tuesday.
“I am impressed with my squad because it comprises almost 80 per cent of elite league players. There are lots of positives from the squad as we have been training with the senior national team and it gave me hope that they are ready for the first leg,” Ntibane said.

“The sky is the limit but we will take each game as it comes. We will take each game as a final. We do not want to dwell on history because we have never participated in the tournament but we are looking to do well in our debut,” he added.
