MBABANE – The Royal Eswatini Police (REP) and Mbabane Raiders are celebrating a dream start in the E10 000 Inhlonhla Knockout Netball Tournament.

At least nine teams began the chase for the E2 500 first prize during round robin matches at OlympAfrica Sports Development Centre in Lobamba two days ago. The opening games were expectedly headlined by the Group A showdown between security forces sides REP and Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force (UEDF).

Despite lacking depth as some of the players were held up in volleyball games, REP still had verve to grind out a 28-12 win over UEDF.
In their other game, REP made light work of Two Sticks, with a 50-7 win.

Meanwhile, Mbabane Raiders also avoided defeats in their opening fixtures.
They beat OlympAfrica by 32-23, before shaking off a stubborn Manzini Ladies with a 35-32 win.

Meanwhile, OlympAfrica, who paraded mainly scholars, also proved daring on the court. Despite parading vertically-challenged players, they saw off Fashion International with a 34-19 win. They were good in transition from defence to attack, but indecisiveness at some point saw them losing possession unnecessarily.
The likes of Fashion and the returning Two Sticks, on the other hand, are yet to register a win.

The teams are grouped into two. The top two in each group will advance to the semi-finals. REP are on top in Group A, while Raiders lead in the other grouping.
National Netball Association of Swaziland (NNAS) Secretary Ntombikayise Masango was all smiles after the success of the opening games.
“The turnout was impressive.

“Games will also continue this coming weekend. The curtain will fall on the tournament on December 18,” she said.
Masango, on the other hand, congratulated newly-appointed Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs Harries ‘Madze’ Bulunga, saying the association was happy that a sport personality, who understands challenges of the sector, was appointed.
