MBABANE – Your body shape, health and fitness count – make exercising your way of life.

This is the message from bodybuilder Thando Mzamo, a first time Mr Eswatini contestant in the 2018/19 pageant. He advised the public to stay healthy, fit and in good body shape, making the gym or exercise a way of life.

“This is a way of life. It is part of one’s daily routine,” said Mzamo, who is nicknamed Starring. He hails from Manzini, Coates Valley in Wilmer Park and will be among next month’s Barbosa Classic Bodybuilding Competition competitors. This event is billed for Emfuleni Lifestyle in Ezulwini. Its exact date is November 10.

“This is not an easy sport as it requires a lot of disciplined and regimented lifestyle to be embraced. The hardest challenge which surpasses the daily intense training is the diet. It demands a lot of discipline and financial investment. Personally, I prefer a bulk of protein and vitamins because protein promotes muscle growth and the food that we eat as body builders should be highly nutritious and measured. Keeping up with the diet is a huge challenge beyond the training itself,” explained the 26-year-old whose body work journey began in 2010 under humble beginnings in the small town of Malkerns through self-made training equipment.

He will be competing in the Muscular Model category and currently weighs 89kg. The model body builder revealed that he follows a strict training daily routine, hitting the gym six times a week. He dedicates two hours of training daily, focusing on specific body parts as this is no sport but a way of life for him. From Monday through to Saturday, he focuses on the legs, chest and biceps, shoulders and triceps, back, arms and full body freestyle respectively. He said that his favourite exercise was the deadlift, which works out about 90 per cent of all body parts in one movement. Speaking of his diet, he said it consisted mainly of chicken breasts, fresh fish, raw mixed vegetables, beans, pasta, and lot of water, brown rice, wheat, oat meal and fibre. On the use of supplements and steroids, his response was that supplements were a necessity for body builders but was completely against the use of either ingested or injected steroids.
