MANZINI – At least over 300 daring runners took to the road for the fourth edition of the Simunye Friendship Run.

This was confirmed by Zithande Athletics Club coach Nsizwa Thwala on Saturday after the race. The three-in-one race was held on Saturday at Mavuso Sports Centre. The 42km event was won by Correctional Services runner, Wandile Nxumalo in 02:55:55 hours with Ngeti Shongwe bagging gold in the ladies category. She reached the winning point after 04:50:00 hours.

In the 21km event, Muzi Hlophe was the winner in 1:21:15 hours, with Portia Mdluli coming first in the female category. The latter clocked 02:00 hours.
Nhlanhla Fakudze won the 10km race in the male category, clocking at 1:00 hours, with Futhi Kunene finishing first in the females. She posted a time of 1:26:00 hours.

Thwala said they were happy about the attendance despite the chilly weather conditions.
“Last year we had over 400 runners. The reason the numbers were so high last year was because we had partners in Shukuma Swaziland. The weather was also perfect but this year it was not favourable and we did not have partners. However, we do invite companies to join us since we are promoting road running as a group,” Thwala said.

He further said their ultimate goal was promoting healthy living among friends, family members and the country at large.
“The people did show up and we had participants from South Africa and Lesotho. We are honoured to have them in the race. We do hope we will have more people attending next year. This is for fun and keeping a healthy lifestyle and being fit,” he said.
