BIG BEND – Seasoned cyclist William Kelly has raced to the top in the inaugural 60km Sisekelo Mountain Bike (MTB) Challenge.

Sisekelo High School in Big Bend was home to the event on Saturday. Provisional results showed that Kelly clocked 02:30 hours to win ahead of other equally-fierce competitors. The race started at the school and the competitors did three laps at the nearby Mhlosanga Nature Reserve before racing back to the starting point.
“It was a good race. The route was well marked and we endured a few climbs,” said the proud champion.

However, Kelly was disappointed that the improved Thulani Gule could not finish the race. The pair raced together in the early stages of the race, but Gule eventually withdrew after his bicycle had a puncture. “Gule is my partner in the Inyatsi Swazi Frontier from October 11. It was unfortunate we couldn’t finish together,” said Kelly, who will endure a 55km race in Mozambique today.

Sifiso Mhlanga and Clinton McNamara completed the list of podium finishers after finishing second and third, respectively. Other events were 40, 20, and 10km long, as some scholars from the hosts joined the seasoned competitors at the trails. Over 30 cyclists took part in the races and Cycling Association of Swaziland President Sihlangu Nhlabatsi also made a stop at the venue in support of the festivities.
