LOBAMBA – It’s a dream come true for the Eswatini National Tennis Association (ENTA) after the completion of the about E500 000 tennis courts.

The two courts constructed at the Olympia Africa Sports Centre are in international standard, as they can host international tournaments. They will be put to test on Saturday and Sunday during the Swaziland Building Society (SBS) Juniors tournament.

The courts were constructed by anonymous sponsors through the efforts of the current ENTA Executive Committee headed by President Maxwell Jele. This was the dream and goal of the executive when they were elected into office in 2016. Jele confirmed yesterday that the courts were ready to host games but they will be put to test this weekend before they are officially opened.

Jele said this was only the first phase of the project as they are still waiting for a response from the International Tennis Federation (ITF), to financially assist in the construction of another two courts to make them four. “Thanks to all the stakeholders who came on board to assist us in realising our dream of having our national tennis centre. The whole project is four courts and the two courts are just phase one of the project.

We are hopeful that ITF will assist us in completing the project and have the other two courts,” he said. Jele said infrastructure plays a major role in the development of sports. He said the last time tennis enjoyed having such facilities was about 25 years ago.

“It has been expensive for the association to book courts for tournaments and training of players. Now we own facilities that we will have access to anytime. The country was having a challenge in hosting international tournaments but with this tennis centre, everything is now possible,” he added.
