MBABANE – All the participants were winners in the end.  Over 200 women, young and old, braved the rain and gathered at Prince of Wales Ground on Saturday where they played different sports, being athletics, netball and soccer. In netball, Mbabane Municipal Council was crowned the champions of the inaugural National Women’s Sports Day.

The long-anticipated and first of its kind Swaziland National Sports and Recreation Council’s National Women’s Sports Day was a great success and all teams took home gold medals, making all of them winners. The only difference was with the champions who took home a trophy.

There were six netball teams that competed during the women’s sports event; Auto Zone, SOS Legends, SOS juniors, Houstons, Vixens and Mbabane Municipal Council. Leading by example was the organiser of the event, Ntombikayise Magongo from SNSRC, who was Goalscorer for the Houstons team.

She expressed her gratitude towards government for recognising women’s rights and empowering them to participate in sports and stay healthy. “Today (Saturday) is a special day for us as women and we are truly honoured that the government recognises us enough to dedicate a day especially for women to come together and play sports. I hope that more women will join us next year as this will be an annual event from now onwards,” she said.
