MBABANE – The country’s women’s national team, Sitsebe is hopeful of being crowned regional queens when they play in the 2018 COSAFA Women’s Championship.

The team headed by Fisiwe Hlophe, will be among the 12 countries already confirmed for the championships to be staged in the South African coastal city of Port Elizabeth for two weeks. Hlophe is already at training camp with the team.

Some of the countries that have already confirmed their participation include South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia and Eswatini.  The two other nations will be confirmed by the end of this week.

The Eswatini Football Association (EFA) Marketing and Communications Officer Muzi Radebe, said the final squad will be announced in due course as for now the technical bench was accessing a number of players.
“They have been preparing for the championships for some time now and we hope the full squad to travel will be announced next week, especially after the draw,” he said.

The draw for the competition will take place on August 29 (next Wednesday) and will see the 12 teams split into three groups, each containing four sides. The top team in each pool will advance to the semi-finals along with the best-placed runners-up.
There will be two stadiums used, the 10 000-seater Wolfson Stadium and the more intimate Gelvandale Stadium, both in Port Elizabeth.
South Africa are the defending champions after lifting the trophy in a thrilling tournament in Zimbabwe last year, and along with Zambia, they will use this event as a build-up to the African Women’s Championship that will be held in Ghana in November.
Women’s football has seen a huge surge in popularity around the world in recent years and southern Africa is no different, with ever more teams sprouting up at club level.
