MBABANE – The stars are shining brighter for Oyama Kyokushinkaikan Karate star Cebisile Mthembu.

In only her third tournament, since returning to the sport from Sosai Karate recently Mthembu reclaimed her ladies open weight division title from Joy Ononogbu, beating her in two consecutive national senior’s tournaments while she has just had her first international.

It was in South Africa’s Gauteng Championships held last Saturday that she hoisted the country’s flag higher once again in the international domain. She kicked her way in the tatami (fighting ring) right to the trophy and gold medal – she was the champion.

“We had sent five ladies through our own efforts and they did not disappoint as Cebi was champion in open ladies division, while Welile was third in same and received a trophy for it as well,” confirmed Oyama Kyokushinkaikan Karate Association of Swaziland (OKKAS) Sensei Bongani Ndzabandzaba yesterday.
Ndzabandzaba said this was a showing by the four ladies plus young Yenziwe Kunene, who competed in the under-45kg category. He said it just showed the effort they put to keeping Oyama on top even beyond the borders.

Mthembu has shone in Zimbabwe and the European Championships about two years ago, bringing home a medal and finishing in the semis respectively. She is expected to represent the country in the World Cup, China late this year, along with undefeated national male champion in the open division, Linda Dlamini.
