MBABANE – Senior Premier League of Eswatini Executive Member Peter ‘Touch’ Magagula has been elected new Chairman.

After a dramatic meeting that dragged until after 11pm last night, Magagula was endorsed at the polls by the governors to step into the shoes of the late Victor Gamedze, who was gunned down on January 14. He won ahead of only other hopeful Sicelo Mkhonta at Sigwaca House in Mbabane last night.

The latter got seven votes, while Magagula got 10.  However, a second round of voting was needed as they shared equal votes from the 16 teams that voted in the first hurdle.

Also elected on the day was an extra executive member. It was Tambuti’s Tambuti Rudolf Matsenjwa, who was unopposed as fellow competitor Vusimango Dlamini of Young Buffaloes withdrew from the race. Former Royal Leopard Chairman Mxolisi Dlamini, who was a nominee, was disqualified as he never showed up.

Magagula, who was acting before last night’s meeting, will be in office for the remainder of the two years of the current’s executive four-year term. He said he was honoured by the vote of confidence, saying professionalising the running of clubs was top priority.

Meanwhile, the meeting dragged for hours following disagreements on proposals and this item had to be deferred for a special meeting. The financial report was also not approved by the membership because they got it late.
