MBABANE – Moneni Pirates are racing against time to register their players for tomorrow’s EswatiniTelecom Charity Cup play-off match following a protest by some senior players.

A majority of the senior players at the Moneni ‘Buccaneers’ are refusing to sign new contracts so that they can be registered for the games tomorrow. Pirates face Young Buffaloes in a semi-final and they are in a race to join the main tournament featuring the ‘Big Three’ in Mbabane Swallows, Mbabane Highlanders and Manzini Wanderers next month. The bone of contention, it has been reliably gathered, is an issue of unpaid salaries for the past season. They want the money paid before they commit to the team for another year.

Initially, almost all the players were reluctant to sign, but some conditionally signed on the dotted line with the hope that their demands would be addressed soonest. It is a majority of the senior players who are unmoved in their bid to be given their pay. One of the players, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of victimisation, confirmed the unrest, saying they were not ready to go to the field of play until their demands were met.

Pirates PRO Jabu Ndzingane confirmed that there were challenges regarding the players’ salaries, but said the team was working around the clock to address the challenges. She said they were in talks with the aggrieved parties and were hopeful they would eventually see eye to eye on the issue.
