E10 000 UP FOR GRABS FOR CYCLISTS

MANZINI – It is all systems go for the second instalment of the Mormond ‘Stix’ Charity Mountain Bike (MTB) Challenge following a successful launch last night.


The event, which is a headlined by a 55km race, was launched before guests led by Minister of Sport, Culture and Youth Affairs David ‘Cruiser’ Ngcamphalala last night. It takes centre stage on August 11 at Manzini Club.


Mormond Electrical Engineering Director John ‘Mashesha’ Thomson, said up to E10 000 would be up for grabs for cyclists in the main races. The male and female champion in the 55km event will get E3 000 apiece. In the 35km race, the winner gets E2 000.
“I’m grateful to Mormond staff for going an extra mile in making this event a success,” said Thomson.


Minister Ngcamphalala was full of praise for the organisers on learning that the race was a charity initiative.
 Meanwhile, the terrain is said to be perfect for cyclists who enjoy rugged, fast flowing cattle, jeep and washout trails.


Also present was Swaziland National Sport and Recreation Council CEO Darius Dlomo, as well as leaders from the communities who are along the route. Communities along the route include Elwande, Gundwini and Nhlambeni in Manzini.


Winning in the past year was current off-road races champion Muzi Shabangu. Cycling Association of Swaziland President Sihlangu Nhlabatsi challenged him alongside female defending champion Retha Harding, to clock an improved time. The pair reached the winning point in the first edition in 02:34 and 03:07 hours, respectively.
