MBABANE – The Swazi Telecom Charity Cup could yet again be played at the Somhlolo National Stadium if work at the stadium is completed on time.

Minister of Sports, Culture, and Youth Affairs David ‘Cruiser’ Ngcamphalala said yesterday that he had instructed the PLS Chief Operations Officer Pat Vilakati and the under secretary in his ministry to go to the stadium and assess whether it would be possible to stage the Charity Cup there or not.

He said he also realised that the Mavuso Sports Centre would be too small.
The minister said he expects a report from Vilakati and his under secretary this morning.

“If it is possible, we have to arrange that the major refurbishments at the stadium are put on hold until the day of the tournament. The major components will be the removal of the floodlight posts. If we can put that part of the project on hold, I believe the stadium could be available for use in August,” he said.

The minister added that the good thing was that work was currently ongoing. He said whatever decision they come to will be informed by observations from the contractor. However, he said he would wait for the report from his envoys before he seeks a way forward.

PLS COO Vilakati said negotiations between stakeholders were ongoing about the use of the stadium for the Charity Cup. He said at the moment they were not sure where and when the competition shall be staged.
“There are no decisions at table currently. We will release a statement once agreements are in place,” he said.
