MBABANE – Zithande Athletics Club on Saturday threw a surprise party for its Comrades Marathon heroes at Trelawney Park in Manzini.

The party followed a haul of five silver medals at this year’s Comrades race in South Africa.

Zithande Athletics Club’s coach Nsizwa Thwala said his athletes deserved to be thanked in this way following their performance in the race. “Our performance in the Comrades was the best for both club and country. I want to thank my athletes for their commitment, and urge them to continue giving it their best.

It is very easy to lose focus once you achieve something, but they have remained humble,” he said.
Thwala noted that they had been able to produce stars from raw talent. He said he was confident from the programme they had in place leading to the Comrades that they would be competitive.

“I told my athletes that with the programme we had, we had every chance to succeed. For three years in a row we have had the first Swazi on the finish line of the Comrades Marathon being from Zithande Athletics Club,” he said.
Zithande’s heroic silver medallists included Melusi Innocent Lukhele, Ntokozo Mamba, Blessing Kunene, Kwenzokuhle Thomo, and Mbonisi Mahlangu.

The coach further thanked other team members for supporting the group, and their international running family in South Africa for their continued support. He said they would continue to rely on hard work for future races.
