JAMA-ING FOR THE NBA RAPTORS 905

MBABANE – Eswatini-born basketball coach Jama Mahlalela has taken the world of basketball by storm after his appointment as NBA G League affiliate, Raptors 905 mentor.


Mahlalela is the son to the late Swaziland Railway CEO Gideon Mahlalela. He became the third head coach in the team’s history and joins the club following five seasons as an assistant coach at the National Basketball Association (NBA) level.
The Raptors 905 are the B team to the senior team, Toronto Raptors campaigning in the NBA. The G League is the NBA’s official minor league.

He grew up in Toronto area and played college basketball for five years at the University of British Columbia. Mahlalela joined the Raptors front office in 2011 as director of player development, where he served for two seasons. He moved to the Raptors bench in 2013-14.


During the summers, Mahlalela was an active member in Raptors GM Masai Ujiri’s Giants of Africa camps and the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders programme.
“I am excited and grateful for the wonderful opportunity to coach the Raptors 905 team. I am eager to share my passion for the development of this sport with our young players and hope to use my previous experience as a Raptors assistant coach to reinforce and strengthen the connection between the two programmes,” Mahlalela said in a press release published by www.sportsnet.ca

“My family and I would like to extend our sincere thanks to Masai Ujiri, Bobby Webster, Dan Tolzman, Larry Tanenbaum and the entire ownership group,” he added.
Mahlalela takes over a Raptors 905 team that has appeared in the NBA G League finals in back-to-back seasons. He will be a part of the Raptors coaching squad for the 2018 Las Vegas Summer League next month.
“We are very excited to add Jama as our new head coach,” Raptors 905 general manager Dan Tolzman said in a statement.
