MBABANE – MTN will continue sponsoring the Premier League of Swaziland (PLS) league for another three years after the two parties finally agreed terms and clauses of the new deal.

The Times Sports Desk reported back in October last year that MTN offered an E14 million proposal to the PLS, over three years. The curtain fell on the three-year Swazi MTN/Premier League of Swaziland sponsorship at the end of the 2017/2018 season. At that time, it was understood that Swazi MTN has proposed to increase the sponsorship by 22 per cent for the next three years; 2018/2019, 2019/2020, 2020/2021 seasons.

Over the past years, Swazi MTN would increase the Premier League’s sponsorship by 10 per cent each time the sponsorship had to be renewed. This would mean, if there information gathered then was endorsed by the two parties, the total proposed package would be around E14m spread over the next three football seasons considering that the expired contract was for about E11.4m.

MTN’s Senior Manager Communications Meshack Maseko confirmed the new deal has been ironed out with the date of the launch expected to be released before the end of the week. He said MTN will host two events in the next couple of days, the 2017/18 prize presentation and the 2018/19 launch.

“It is during the launch that the new package will be revealed,” Maseko said.
The two parties had been locked in meetings over clauses that the PLS and its affiliates wanted removed in the new deal that included among others the non-usage of kits that had MTN Group’s competitors that include Swazi Mobile and to an extent Swazi Telecom.

The country’s two most supported teams Mbabane Highlanders and Manzini Wanderers are sponsored by Swazi Mobile and as a result, they could not use kits with their sponsor name.
