MBABANE – Two former silver medalists have been named in Zithande Athletics Club’s squad for this year’s Comrades Marathon.
The Comrades Marathon will take place from Pietermaritzburg to Durban South Africa on June 10.

Releasing the names of those already registered for the race, Zithande’s coach Nsizwa Thwala said it has been seven long months of preparation and they were now ready to compete. He said in total, they had registered 27 athletes for the ultra-marathon, which is one of Africa’s richest by a mile.

“In our team, we have Ntokozo Mamba who was the first Swazi to finish the Comrades Marathon last year. Both Mamba and Blessing Kunene are the only athletes we have to have achieved back to back silver medals in the Comrades,” said Thwala.

He added that his team trained harder as they ran distances longer and tougher than the Comrades in their preparations. “We started training back in November 2017. This is a standard we have adopted because we treat every marathon as the first one. Our strategy has worked because we have improved a lot over the years,” he said.

Thwala said they had used the Manzini-Lomahasha route as part of their preparations, which was a distance of 110km compared to the 90km covered by the Comrades Marathon.
