MBABANE – Four junior golfers have maintained their cutting edge beyond the country’s greens.

Blake Williams, Mfundo Nxumalo, Qiniso Mkhonta and Phayo Dhlamini tested their resolve against their South African counterparts during the Lydenburg Junior Open on Sunday. The tournament was played at the Lydenburg Golf Club in South Africa’s Mpumalanga Province.

In the B Division, Phayo’s flawless drives and putts earned him the best gross ahead of Mfundo. The best nett prize was claimed by Qiniso. In the tough A Division, Blake managed to rank fourth.

Confirming the latest developments, Swaziland Golf Union President Albert Mhlanga, who led the youngsters to the neighbouring country, lauded them for showing character, expressing hope that it was a start of good things to come.
“The commitment of the players is commendable.

“We are planning to send them to more tournaments in Mpumalanga, especially in Middleburg,” said Mhlanga.
Mhlanga, on the other hand, said his office had fruitful talks with the Mpumalanga Golf Union and plans were in place for the country’s best juniors to meet their counterparts from that side for an annual tournament.

“If things go according to plan, we can have an annual tournament between Mpumalanga Golf Union and Eswatini in the next two months,” he said.

Mpumalanga is known to be a ‘happy hunting ground’ for most of the Eswatini’s junior golfers. Gift Zulu, Banele Mavuso and Arvy Shongwe were regulars in the past few years.
