LOBAMBA – A brilliant hat-trick by Mbabane Highlanders’ Mthobisi Mngomezulu inspired the ‘Bull’ to 4-1 success over Vovovo FC at Somhlolo National Stadium yesterday.

The result meant Highlanders finished fifth on the MTN Log standings, which reflects a good measure of success for South Africa-born mentor Mlungisi ‘Professor’ Ngubane, who was in his first season at the helm.

Their opponents in this match hardly threatened until towards the end of the contest when the game opened up and there were plenty of chances on both ends of the pitch. Overall, it was a lacklustre performance by a timid Vovovo FC team that relied mainly on long-range shots.

Highlanders showed their intentions early on with countless forays into the opposition’s half. They had their first attempt on goal as early as the 11th minute when Thabiso Mokenkoane’s header was cleared off the line by defender Bheki Dlamini. Xolani ‘Chocco’ Sibandze had crossed beautifully from the left flank.

A goal was beckoning, and it eventually came in the 24th minute when Mlamuli ‘Mlaba’ Nkambule’s fierce drive ricocheted off the upright. Mngomezulu was on hand to finish superbly into the far corner after Vovovo’s keeper, Tuto Gama had been beaten by the initial shot.

Highlanders continued to pile the pressure and almost scored again in the 27th minute when Mokenkoane’s cross landed right at the feet of Mngomezulu inside the six yard area only for the striker to shoot over the bar unchallenged.
Fortunately, he made amends quickly when he powered a shot in-between Gama’s legs to give Highlanders a 2-0 cushion on the stroke of half-time.
