MBABANE – Walking football brainbox Banele ‘Pupu’ Sikhondze is close to making a dream switch to reigning ABSA Premiership Champions Bidvest Wits after the South Africa team tabled E300 000 for the attacking midfielder.

The South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) side has negotiated ‘Pupu’s prize-tag from Mbabane Swallows’ E750 000 asking prize. The two sides met for negotiations and the red and white giants are not ready to put the plug on the move. Bidvest Wits Football Club, previously known as Wits University, is a South African football club based in the Braamfontein suburb of the city of Johannesburg and plays in PSL. It is nicknamed ‘The Clever Boys’ or ‘The Students’ because of the close affiliation with the University of the Witwatersrand. ‘Pupu’ trained under the close watch of Wits technical team led by respected South African coach Gavin Hunt two weeks ago where he impressed. The enterprising midfielder is out of Swallows crunch MTN League game against Malanti Chiefs tonight after being nabbed by the yellow card rule.

Close sources to the deal revealed Wits has negotiated to pay Swallows E300 000 with lucrative add-ons expected in the form of 20 per cent in the event the player moves to another club. “Nothing has been finalised as of yet but we were in Johannesburg the other Friday where we had negotiations over the potential move. It is an open secret that they want the player but we have to understand that they are in a tight schedule as far as the ABSA Premiership is concerned. We will reveal details of the deal once everything has been ironed out,” said Swallows General Manager Sandile ‘Beyond 2000’ Zwane. Wits are in action tonight as they take the short trip to the Orlando Stadium to face title hunting Orlando Pirates. “It is against our policy to stand in the way of players who seek greener pastures, especially in bigger leagues like that of South Africa. Our ambition is to help our players realise their dreams by giving them the platform to perform,” Zwane added.
