MANZINI – Senior football national team Sihlangu put the icing on the cake in what was a great day for Eswatini with a historic 1-0 win over visiting Namibia’s Desert Warriors.

It was the perfect 50/50 gift for the nation and His Majesty King Mswati III as the country  did not only assume a new name, ‘Kingdom of Eswatini’  but celebrated 50 years of independence and the king’s 50th birthday at a jam packed Mavuso Trade and Exhibition Centre, inside the busy-as-a-beehive Manzini city on Thursday.

Speedy forward Bonginkosi ‘Manyovu’ Dlamini’s deflected shot in the late stages of the match ensured the celebrations continued into the night.
Coach Anthony Mdluli was minus three stars from the 34-men squad. Strikers Mthunzi ‘Xavi’ Mkhontfo of Green Mamba and Mbabane Swallows’ Sandile Hlatshwako alongside defender Siboniso Ngwenya of Young Buffaloes, were all excused because of different injuries.

“We played well and I was happy with the mentality from the boys. We put the expected effort to win the game though we did not convert the many chances created,” said Mdluli who has had a perfect start on the biggest coaching job in the country after playing to a goalless draw away in Seychelles in his first game in charge of Sihlangu.

Meanwhile, prior to the game, Captain Tony Tsabedze said expectations were always high in the national team.
The left side midfielder is one of the most capped players in the squad.
“In all the years I have been with Sihlangu, I’ve noted massive improvement from the current crop,” he said.
