MBABANE – The country’s boxer, Zweli Dlamini could not beat Canada’s Eric Basran, which saw him bow out of the Commonwealth Games as a brave warrior.

The 56kg boxer lost to the Canadian in the quarter-finals of the games. His exit marks dreams of a medal in the games but he exhibited very good performance. His colleague, Thabiso Dlamini also gave a brave showing but was defeated in the last 16 of the games. The 19-year-old Zweli reached the quarter-finals after defeating Bashir Nasir from Uganda 4:1 in the last 16 stage.

The Matsapha Boxing Club member lost 5:0. He could have reached the semi-finals of the games where he would have been in good a chance to be among the podium finishers.

The country was represented by the two boxers under coaches Samuel Tsambokhulu and Fanana ‘Tyson’ Dlamini. Thabiso was making his second appearance in the games, having competed in the 2014 games in Scotland. Former Malkerns boxer Simanga ‘The Boer’ Shiba remains superior after having brought home a bronze medal in the 2006 Melbourne, Australia Games.

Chef de Mission Pearl Dlamini said it was a great showing by Zweli, as he was making his first appearance.
“His opponent had the advantage of height. He was taller than Zweli and he was moving all over the ring. That caused problems for our boxer. He really did well and the future is bright. While we are here to compete, we are also learning and trying to reach out from those countries whose standard is high to assist us,” she said.
