MBABANE – The first game in charge for Coach Anthony Mdluli and his assistant Caleb Ngwenya at national team Sihlangu has ended in a goalless draw.

Fielding quite a strong starting line-up that saw Young Buffaloes’ keeper Nhlanhla Gwebu take the goal and Green Mamba’s striker Mthunzi ‘Xavi’ Mkhontfo leading the attack since his return from the Democratic Republic of Congo’s AS Vita late last year, the team is said to have dominated play for prolonged periods.

According to an online report, however, despite creating scoring chances better than their hosts, who they beat 4-0 in the 2016 COSAFA Senior Challenge, it was all in vain as by full-time, the scoreline was 0-0. This was Sihlangu’s first international since playing Zambia a while ago and the coach had emphasised the importance of having one as they prepare for the COSAFA Cup in June.

Mkhontfo is said to have troubled the Seychelles defence but all his efforts were in vain as the hosts were also said to have been tight defensively. According to internet reports, Seychelles had respect for Swaziland who beat them 4-0 in 2016 but gave a better showing compared to that massacre which saw Mbabane Swallows’ soft-spoken but exciting forward Felix Badenhorst score a brace.

Badenhorst and his teammates, at least over seven of them, were not part of this friendly along with their Royal Leopard counterparts as they had the Ingwenyama Cup final to focus on over the weekend, which Swallows won 2-1.
The Swazi defence is also said to have played well, especially young Buffaloes’ Siboniso Mamba and Green Mamba’s Banele Dlamini even though they were beaten twice but both Seychelles’ chances came off the upright.

Overall, Swaziland dominated the match and should have buried it as they created the most chances in the match but were not clinical in the final third. Sihlangu will play the COSAFA Cup and also the AFCON Cup 2019 Qualifiers against Tunisia at home on September 7 and Egypt away on October 10, 2018.
Mdluli, who took over from Pieter De Jongh after the latter parted ways with the NFAS in December last year, had the local mother body appoint Green Mamba’s Caleb Ngwenya as his assistant, while former Manzini Sundowns’ coach Musa Manyatsi was confirmed as the goalkeeper coach.
