MBABANE – Tasked with reimbursing accident victims, Sincephetelo Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (SMVAF) delivered a spectacle in their third edition of the Ingwenyama Cup final.

Football, culture and athletics blended, producing a colourful event witnessed by millions across the continent and beyond as Mbabane Swallows came from behind to see off Royal Leopard 2-1 after extra time. We break down the 2017/18 edition…

Moment of the tourney
Over 10 000 squeezed inside Somhlolo National Stadium, but when His Majesty King Mswati III addressed the nation and the world through Supersport Television anchor Phumlani Msibi, it was a sight to behold. It was not only a good advertisement of our football and culture or the King’s affection for sports, but it was the message sent to the outside world on how passionate Swazis are with football and their culture and how dearly they love the Monarch. When the King was asked to talk to his people, those in attendance roared- Bayethe!

76 Majestic goals
A whopping 76 goals were scored from the last 32 batch of matches to Sunday’s finals, equating to 2.5 goals per match from the 31 played. Games from the regional phase of this epic tournament that, consisted of 108 teams, are not included. So tight was the top goalscorer race that Sandile Hlatshwako of Mbabane Swallows and Manzini Sundowns’ Melusi Mkhwanazi will share the E10 000 prize after netting four apiece.

Tony, Felix favourites
for big prize
In all honesty, there was no standout player in the 2018 edition but the contribution of Tony Tsabedze and Felix Badenhorst, maybe to an extent Sandile Hlatshwako in Swallows’ run to triumph, can be noted. Tony has three goals under his belt but it was Sunday’s stupendous 54th minute equaliser against Royal Leopard that set the remarkable comeback to glory. Felix, on the other hand, scored two but his contribution when he nodded Swallows winner against Manzini Wanderers, in a final-before-final quarter-final pairing, was incredible.
