MBABANE – Four-time Class P champions John ‘Mashesha’ Thomson and Maurice Zermatten will be in the spotlight as South Africa’s Motosport Cross Country season starts.

With the retirement of multiple South African champions Evan Hutchison and Danie Stassen, the Special Vehicle category championship is up for grabs when the Mpumalanga 400 gets underway in Dullstroom between today and tomorrow.

According to a media statement copied to this publication, Hutchison and Stassen called it quits on distinguished careers to signal the end of an era. That throws the championships wide open and shifts the spotlight onto Thomson and Maurice Zermatten, among others. The duo steps up a class this season.

“Thomson and Zermatten did not do themselves justice last season in the switch from Class P to Class A. “They are unlikely to repeat the performance, and with consistency also their strong point, they should prosper in championships where gathering in regular points is often more important than the number of wins in a season,” reads the statement in part.

‘Mashesha’ and Zermatten are seasoned campaigners in the South African championship and race under the MORMOND banner.
