MBABANE – Three Young Buffaloes players appeared before magistrate Sifiso Vilakati yesterday and were slapped with a combined E4 000 fines for assault.

Striker Phiwa Dlamini, 23 of Mahlangatja faced to charges of assaulting a Swazi TV journalist with an open hand and that of attacking one Bongani Dlamini. Captain and combative midfielder Nkosing’phile ‘Nyandoro’ Tsabedze, 35 of Malindza along with Nhlanhla ‘Mshengu’ Kunene, 30 of Nkhaba were given a one-year behind bars sentence with an option of E1 000 fine each.

The trio appeared before magistrate Dlamini at the Mbabane Magistrate Courts yesterday morning for the assault case that happened last April. The players duly paid their fines and are free as the army side prepare for an intriguing MTN League title run-in with Mbabane Swallows and are also in the last eight of the magical SwaziBank Cup.

The three have not only been key members of the Buffaloes team but national team Sihlangu in recent years. Just recently, the players represented Buffaloes in their ill-fated Total CAF Confederation Cup tie against South Africa’s Cape Town City.

The players alleged assaulted Bongani Dlamini behind the Somhlolo National Stadium dressing rooms and the Swazi TV journalist was not sparred when they realised he was taking a video footage of the assault using his cellphone. The newsman had his phone taken from him by the players and Phiwa assaulted the journalist with an open hand. The video footage was deleted and it is alleged that the device was returned to the reporter by Buffaloes Chief Executive Officer Sandile Gwebu.
