MBABANE – It is no more the beautiful game but slowly turning into some sort of social turmoil. Two football fans, alleged to be of Mbabane Swallows, were arrested yesterday after a clash with their bitter sworn rivals Mbabane Highlanders counterparts. The two sets of supporters had a nasty quarrel after yesterday’s SwaziBank Cup Last 16 double-header at Somhlolo National Stadium.

Highlanders cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win over Mbabane City in the opening match with Green Mamba sending Swallows packing in the main fixture, courtesy of a Musa Dlamini solitary strike.
The commotion started when Highlanders supporters celebrated Swallows’ exit from the magical tournament, yelling unprintable expletives, some that are too sensitive to be repeated.
This triggered the clash as the fans started exchanging leather. A gun-shot was allegedly fired to scatter the battlefield.

A fan, who was wearing a Kaizer Chiefs replica, approached a kombi that was ferrying Swallows fans where he continued with celebratory insults and further smashed a window, prompting those inside to get out and beat him up.
The fan was badly injured and rushed to hospital where he was treated and discharged. Police took in the kombi and arrested two fans in connection with the commotion.

Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Khulani Mamba confirmed the arrests from the Sunday football matches.
“The assaulted fan has since been discharged from hospital but two were arrested in connection with the supporters clash at the stadium,” he said.
