MHLAMBANYATSI – It was a perfect combination. This explains the reason behind team Robyn Young winning the Adventure Sport Triathlon competition that was held at Luphohlo Dam yesterday. The name triathlon emanates from that there are three sports codes that are involved during this competition. These are swimming, cycling and athletics.

Team Robyn Young was comprised of 17-year-old swimmer Robyn Young, top cyclist Thulani Gule and Enjabulweni Swimming Academy coach Kevin Charles. The trio managed to win the 14th edition in a record time of 48:20 minutes. This shows an improvement as last year’s champions clocked at the finish line at 1:00:02 hours. Team Simphiwe Dlamini-led team from Sharks Swimming Club won the previous edition.

The champions excelled in all the three categories. Young used a freestyle to lead her team flawlessly to a bright start in the 500 meters swimming session. Seasoned cyclist Thulani Gule made no mistake as he  as he finished the 12km cycling race still enjoying a healthy lead and Enjabulwini Swimming Academy coach Kevin Charles maintained the lead and eventually finished the five kilometres run while still ahead of everyone else.
The team attributed the win to a good combination.

Young said as much as she was good in swimming her partners ensured that they won the race.
“Look, last year I was nowhere near the podium and all thanks to Thulani and Kevin who did well and ensured we win the competition. It was a good experience altogether as I am very happy that I managed to win the 500 metres and give my team a positive start,” Young said.

Charles said he managed to maintain the same pace throughout the 5km race despite the scorching heat.
“Well, it was a team effort. Without my teammates we could have not done this, so all thanks to Young and Thulani. They told me yesterday. Although I was not prepared enough, I took the challenge and it was a great experience altogether,” Charles explained.

Coming second were the trio of Simanga Dlamini, Meluleki Simelane and John Abraham on an impressive time of 58:10 minutes.
Dlamini said last year, he was third from the bottom and having partners helped a great deal.
