MBABANE- Staying fit and healthy through exercise is fast becoming a hit for many in the country – families are pouring in at the Mbabane Parkrun.

This was evidenced during the 44th edition of the five kilometres timed run/jog which starts and finishes at Mbabane Club at 8am every Saturday.
There were quite a number of families that participated in yesterday’s run, quite higher than the past edition. These included the Mardall family, which was comprised of Julie Hertslet and son Tay Mardall, a Dlamini family, mother and son (Neli Nkambule and Fifa Dlamini) and Dennis Van Reenen also came with his two sons. Lee Ann Heenan also came with her family.

Neli Nkambule said it has become their lifestyle to run together as a family.
“Me and my son have made it a habit to run together although he has missed one of the races in the past few weeks. The parkrun is like a family affair because somehow you do not need to compete. We are looking at inviting the other family members to be part of the race because it encourages members to bond,” Nkambule said.
Dennis Van Reenen said his sons invited him to the race and he couldn’t turn down their request.

“It’s a wonderful experience to run with my sons and I always look forward to Saturday,” Reenen said.
Although the attendance in groups and teams is growing, there are still some individual runners who are on a personal fitness journey while others are always partaking just to improve their time in each edition.
These are the likes of Siyabonga Sihlongonyane, who won this week’s edition, clocking at an impressive 15:57 minutes. He almost came closer to beating the Mbabane Parkrun record which stands at 14:56 minutes which was set by Umbutfo Swaziland Defence Force athlete Nkululeko Gama.

“I am all about competing against time. I always strive to do better than in my previous race. The parkrun also helps me to stay fit as an athlete,” Sihlongonyane said.
Coming first in the women category was Ethan Abrahams on 23:29 minutes and Lungile Sibandze came second, clocking 31:03 minutes.
