KIGALI – All three national team cyclists were forced to withdraw before completing the tough 156km road race here in Kigali, Rwanda yesterday.

The African Continental Road Championships reached climax with the 12-lap circuit road race just outside the Amihoro National Stadium. The Swazi trio in Gcina Banda, Mduduzi Zwane and Muzi Shabangu was among 115 cyclists from countries across the continent that include cycling powerhouses Eritrea and the hosts.

While Muzi proved the most daring Swazi cyclists after surviving nine of the 12 laps, Mduduzi and Gcina were withdrawn by race officials after the first four rounds.
The general rule is that no cyclist should be lapped.
Gcina and Mduduzi were derailed by a Moroccan cyclist, who fell on their path. They were forced to play catch-up before they were forcefully withdrawn.
Muzi, on the other hand, held on until the ninth lap.

Meanwhile, it proved to be a fierce battle for a podium finish and Aman Werkilol from Eritrea was the winner in 03:56:29 hours. Countryman Metkel Eyob ranked second and reached the winning point about two minutes later.
The curtain fell on what was an exciting seven-day event yesterday. The country’s cyclists are expected back home before the end of the day.
