MALKERNS – The Elephants got their 2018 Rugby National League campaign off to a winning start, beating the Cheetahs 87-10 in a pulsating clash at Malkerns Country Club on Saturday.

They are at the summit of the six-team league with 10 points after two victories since the league started last week. The Luve-based outfit was driven by Wandile Magwaza, Thando Dlamini and captain Mlandvo ‘Nketjane’ Mndzebele to their victory, who all scored tries.

They dominated the game from start to finish and missed penalties at the start of the match.  Cheetahs from Mbabane struggled at the start of the match and they only got their footing in the second half and they were able to score.

Another match played on the day saw Buffalos from Dvokolwako crashing 33-48 to the Vondo’s from Malkerns. These were the only matches played on Saturday. The teams competing in the league are Elephants, Vondos, Rhinos, Titans, Buffalos and Cheetahs.

The Swaziland Rugby Union (SRU) under the leadership of Simanga Magagula, started the league without a sponsor. Magagula took over the presidential positions after the stepping down of Mike Collinson.

He said for now they were struggling as there are no sponsors but they will continue with the games as the players and teams are eager to play the sport.

“It’s not an easy task but due to the commitment of the teams and the players, we have to continue playing. We would greatly appreciate any kind of sponsorships as currently we are struggling with venues, equipment to play the sport and incentives for the teams among others things,” he said.
