MBABANE – St Georges Barracks will tomorrow morning resemble a beehive as athletes converge for the third instalment of the Wafa Wafa Half Marathon.

Yesterday, close to 800 runners had registered for the event, which consists of 21km, 10km and 5km races. Numbers are expected to shoot up ahead of today’s 4pm deadline. Wafa Wafa Half Marathon has gained popularity over the years and is organised by the Umbutfo Swaziland Defence Force (USDF), and financially backed by Puma Energy.

Melusi Sihlongonyane of USDF Athletics Club, has won the opening two editions of the half marathon with Samkelisiwe Tfwala of Royal Swaziland Police (RSP) Athletics Club and USDF’s Nomvula Ntshalintshali, winning in 2016 and 2017 respectively in the ladies category.
Wafa Wafa Half Marathon officially opens the Athletics Association of Swaziland (AAS) marathon season.

Temperatures of up to 28 Degrees Celsius coupled with 77 per cent chances of rain and 72 per cent humidity is expected tomorrow, with the start gun at exactly 6am.
“We plead with runners to arrive early, at around 5.30am to be captured by Protime, our electronic timing partners,” said USDF Athletics Club Public Relations Officer (PRO) Zwelithini Ngwenya.
