RUNNING A HALF MARATHON WITHOUT PROPER TRAINING

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

MBABANE – If you’re not a runner, not an athlete, training for a half marathon might seem like an extremely daunting task.

With a few creative tricks, however, you might be able to make it to the finish line without any training at all.
If you want to give it a try, don’t plan on finishing so that you do not put too much pressure on yourself.

Proper stretches are recommended so you don’t hurt yourself if you’re not used to running long distances (or any distances). Be sure to take breaks when you need them, pace yourself, and you may find you can accomplish something you never thought you could. Some people will be running in the ‘Wafa Wafa’ 21km, 10km and 5km without proper or no training at all. The race is billed for Sunday at Garrison Barracks, Matsapha, starting at 6am.

Tips to use when running without training:

Take walk breaks
Do not plan to complete the race without walking. Approach the race with a run-walk-run plan. For instance, plan to walk through each aid/ water station or decide to take a 3 to 5-minutes walk break every 30 to 45 minutes.
Be conscious of fuel
and hydration

When planning to run a half marathon without training, you need to have a well-defined hydration and nutrition plan. Be sure to consume 40 to 60 grammes of carbohydrates per hour of running. You should also drink plenty of water and electrolyte sports drinks. Take two waters at ever water station, Eat half a banana whenever you see one.
