MBABANE – The hidden truths are out – without the late Victor ‘Maradona’ Gamedze, there would be no Matsapha United in elite football.

The club’s owner, Victor Malambe, whose RSSC United was changed to Matsapha United which is also renowned as the ‘Deep Blue Ocean’, was holding back his emotions as he gave his statement about the arrest of their PLS Board of Governors member Sipho Shongwe in relation to Gamedze’s murder on January 14, 2018, just over a week ago.

“It’s important to make it known that me and the late Gamedze were very good friends and I lived with both men. I also know whenever with each of them, none spoke ill of the other. I also know that Sipho, as someone I welcomed when he was introduced to me by a Highlanders person, knew very well of Gamedze’s role in the club’s existence,” he said.

“Shongwe told me he wanted a team so he can be in football and had tried with few teams but failed to get into any. Because I knew the person who brought him and heard of his Highlanders background, I allowed him to partner with me and run RSSC United but I told him everything Gamedze had done for our existence even then,” he explained.

He said it was unfortunate that Gamedze had to die like this and it was also his prayer that his co-director comes out clean or in the event he did not, it is his wish that Gamedze’s death had nothing to do with football as it would hurt him for life.

“I’d never have peace if this turns out to be football related and Shongwe is convicted. It would destroy me because I am the one who owns Matsapha United and he only wanted to be involved in football. Shongwe even had plans to get into football leadership which is why he asked to be allowed into the PLS Governors and I pulled myself out because you need to own one for a few years before you qualify into the PLS Executive,” he explained.

Malambe recounted how Gamedze helped save RSSC United when things were really bad, with players striking and coaches demanding their unpaid salaries.

“He gave us a loan to keep the fires burning and we finished at position three all because of his assistance. When the Matsapha United idea came with Shongwe, who requested to change the name for sponsorship purposes and to win Matsapha town, Gamedze wrote off the E67 000 debt that we still owed PLS.
