KALANGA – As the casket of slain Mbabane Swallows boss Victor Maradona Gamedze was lowered into the grave, the club’s officials and supporters watched sorrowfully like a pack of chicks who have lost their mother hen.

The picture of long-serving club administrator and former goalkeeper Sandile ‘Beyond 2000’ Zwane gazing into the grave as the casket slowly descended towards Gamedze’s final resting place, with tears rolling down his cheeks, captured the palpable sense of loss. He had lost a brother, teammate, leader and a friend.

At the time, a section of the players and the technical staff also sat watching the proceedings in a sombre mood, and for striker Sandile Hlatshwako, the sight was unbearable as he buried his face in his hands.

They were there for what was their final opportunity to pay their last respects to a chairman who has transformed the club into lofty status. Gamedze was laid to rest yesterday, where a historic over 10 000 people were in attendance.

There was the blowing of vuvuzelas from the supporters who also came in numbers, clad in the club’s famous red, blue and white outfits.
However, for the players, led by skipper Tony ‘TT’ Tsabedze, who has both good and bad days at the club, they have lost a leader, a coach and a teammate with whom they had shared everything.

Before that, the players had conjured the last energy to carry the casket as Gamedze was taken to its final resting place. The vigil got livened up when MP Frans Dlamini took the stage and rendered gospel music. As if that was not enough for the dancing that followed, Phetsile Masilela also brought the house down. The two gospel artists also went with the mood inside the packed tent.
