MBABANE – A great man he was and deserves all the honour he is getting locally and beyond.

That is slain Mbabane Swallows and PLS Chairman Victor ‘Maradona’ Gamedze who also was NFAS Vice-President and an astute businessman who gave Swazis new mobile network company, Swazi Mobile to create competition with MTN Swaziland.

While Swaziland honoured him with calling off all football matches for this weekend, even at regional level, South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) sanctioned a moment of silence in all their ABSA Premier games which started on Friday night.

“Because of the greatness and ties he had established with the PSL, where he had also intended buying a club, we’ve given him a moment of silence in all the games for this weekend and the first was observed last night (Friday),” Kaizer Chiefs’ Manager Bobby Motaung said at the memorial service. The first was observed in the match between Bidvest Wits and Bloemfontein Celtic. Motaung said it was their wish to stay in the country and bury Gamedze but apologised that they also had to leave as their clubs had games.

He said Orlando Pirates were having a game last night while his Chiefs was also playing this afternoon. Pirates were represented by its Manager Floyd Mbele. They immediately rushed to the KMIII International Airport after making their remarks at the memorial service as their flight was due at 2pm.

When they arrived on Friday, they expressed shock that Gamedze’s killing could happen in the country when they have always known Swaziland as a peaceful country. They also managed to meet the Gamedze family as Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs Minister David ‘Cruiser’ Ngcamphalala led them along with football chiefs.
