MBABANE – Ever since the once-off King’s Cup in 2014, South African giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have not won any trophies.

And for that, Chiefs Manager Bobby Motaung yesterday told all in attendance at the late Victor ‘Maradona’ Gamedze’s memorial service at Prince of Wales Ground, that they had always wanted to know from Gamedze what happened at Somhlolo National Stadium on the fateful day of the King’s Cup.

“Victor was a pillar and created the relationship we have with Swaziland. Anyway, for us this is home as we have got Swazi players in the likes of ‘Cool Cat’ and we work with some of those who played for us still. I recall how Victor came up with the King’s Cup but we wanted to ask him what he did to us because since that day, Chiefs and Pirates have not won trophies,” he said while bringing a bit of laughter to ease the tension and emotions.

He said the deceased PLS and Mbabane Swallows chairman was a visionary leader who made things happen as he was also well connected.
“His shocking demise came at a time when we were currently working on bringing back the King’s Cup and this time with more teams taking part but death has now taken him from us,” he said.

He also said as Chiefs, they would always remember Gamedze while also encouraging his team, Swallows to be strong and ensure his spirit lives on forever and ever. Motaung was in the company of the Phefeni Boys’ Communications Officer Vinny Maphosa who also read out a message from the club’s owner, Kaizer Motaung.

“We are here on behalf of Kaizer Chiefs and many South African that are associated with football. Our team boss, Kaizer Motaung, sends his love and peace to all. He said in his written message that it is so cruel to lose such an important branch of the football tree,” Maphosa said.

He said the whole football fraternity here and in South Africa was devastated by the shocking death of Gamedze.
