MBABANE – All-too-powerful South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) Chairman, Dr Irvin ‘Iron Duke’ Khoza has described the assassination of his Swazi counterpart, Victor ‘Maradona’ Gamedze as a ‘devastating loss for Swaziland as a country.’

Reacting to the news which left the whole country reeling in shock, Khoza, who was a personal friend to the amiable businessman and Mbabane Swallows boss, said he was at a loss for words.

Gamedze was gunned down at a Galp Filling Station in Ezulwini on Sunday at 7:10pm by an unknown gunman, after he had seen his beloved Mbabane Swallows beat Manzini Wanderers 1-0 in the quarter-finals of the Ingwenyama Cup at Somhlolo National Stadium.
“Why would someone do such a dastardly act? What did he do to deserve such cold blooded murder?

“The man has done a lot for Swazi people and football in particular. Since I have known him, his humility, compassion and love for football was disarming,” Khoza said.
The Orlando Pirates boss said he last spoke to Gamedze a fortnight ago when he called him to solicit assistance on how to clinch a Television Broadcast deal with one of the fastest growing TV stations in the continent known to this newspaper.

“He was passionate about football and wanted to see Swazi football grow. He was never afraid to call and ask for assistance on such issues, maybe it is because he was business-minded. Mfanakithi ngikhathazekile kakhulu. This is a huge loss to everyone associated with football. He was a gentle giant,” Khoza added in a sombre tone.

Khoza even highlighted the idea of the King’s Cup as an example of how Gamedze’s involvement helped cement the relations between the two countries. South African soccer giants, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs once came to Swaziland to play Mbabane Swallows and Royal Leopard.
