PIGG’S PEAK – There was always going to be one winner in this clash. And that one team was Young Buffaloes who are increasingly becoming unbeatable with each passing game.

At a bumpy Killarney Sports Ground, where over 300 spectators who are already consumed by the festive season, the army side were the team that navigated the unplayable pitch and scored the winning goal. Ndoda Mthethwa, who is in a form of his life, scrapped into the net a loose ball inside the penalty area, 11 minutes from the recess. Strike partner Phiwa Dlamini had chested onto his path a lofted pass from playmaker Wandile ‘Skosh’ Shabangu. In all honesty, it was long coming given the number of opportunities they have missed in the first half which they hugely dominated. Phiwa couldn’t believe 24 minutes into the game, when his rasping shot at 16 yards out bounced off the crossbar with goalkeeper Machawe Dlamini well beaten, Ndoda Mthethwa fluffed the loose ball.

Vovovo curved only one decent opportunity in the opening half, when a freekick at 20 yards by Leon Manyisa 13 minutes into the game was acrobatically parried for a fruitless corner by Sihlangu ace goalkeeper Nhlanhla Gwebu. Buffaloes could have broken the deadlock 11 minutes before the break, when Phiwa rose highest to nod a lofted cross on the left by Benele Mkhabela, who was playing against his former team. The header found Machawe alert to avert any looming danger. After a barren first half, the army side continued to seize control of the game, creating chances but failing to convert, until Ndoda sneaked in to scrap into the net the winner four minutes before hour mark. They then managed the game well, with Vovovo pushing numbers upfront, with their route one approach. Mohammed Sabella was the target man, but he found Siboniso Mamba and Sihlangu Mkhwanazi watertight at the back. The army side held on to the lead until the final whistle from referee Simanga Nhleko, and have now earned a place in the quarter final draw whose date is still to be confirmed.
