MBABANE – Soldier Sipho Ntshalintshali has shot to fame after being elected Swaziland Rifle Association Chairman.

The 35-year-old recorded a landslide victory over former Chairman, William Kelly, and Elvis Shabangu, when the association went to the polls at Mzimpofu Shooting Range outside Manzini two days ago. He got 36 votes while the other two candidates got 11 and 5 votes, respectively. Kelly, who has been in office since the revival of the sport in 2014, stood for the elections in absentia, while Shabangu was eventually elected Vice Chairman. Secretary, Sifiso Mtsetfwa, as well as committee member, Msizi Dludlu, are the only surviving members from the old Board. The former was nominated unopposed. Cycling Association of Swaziland President Sihlangu Nhlabatsi was the electoral officer and he confirmed the results after the polls.

The new boss, who is a member of the Umbutfo Swaziland Defence Force Shooting Club for the past five years, was grateful for the vote of confidence, saying uplifting the standard of the sport was top priority in order for local competitors to return to international competitions. “We can compete internationally again if we get the necessary support because we have competitive shottists. “We also target to market the sport because a lot of people own pistols, but need to be taught gun handling skills,” said Ntshalintshali. The new Board will be in office for the next two years pending the amendment of the constitution.
