CAPE TOWN – Young Buffaloes’ CAF Confederation Cup opponents in South Africa’s Cape Town City are in serious trouble over the usage of a sports betting company logo on their kit.

City were drawn against Dominic Kunene’s troops in the preliminary stage of the CAF Confederation Cup, that gets underway on the first weekend of February next year. Reports suggest the Premier Soccer League (PSL) appears determined to discipline Cape Town City over their insistence on continuing to display SportPesa, a sports betting company logo on their kit.

The move is said to be in breach of that country’s league regulations and the continued defiance could now lead to an expulsion.
The ‘Citizens’ announced their sponsorship deal in early August.

The South African media, especially TimesLive, reported that the expulsion of the club was, therefore, a genuine worst-case scenario.
“There is a possibility‚ too‚ of City being docked three points per game, where they have worn SportsPesa’s logo‚ which would almost certainly mean relegation from the PSL,” reads a report from TimesLive.

Article 9.1.16 of the neighbouring country’s National Soccer league (NSL) Handbook is said to be giving the league the right to “suspend‚ fine‚ terminate the membership of or otherwise sanction or deal with any Member Club” found guilty of such a transgression.

A PSL Board of Governors meeting, according to the reports, was held on September 14 to address the issue, where it was decided that a disciplinary committee hearing would be skipped, with the matter instead to go straight to arbitration‚ which is expected to take place in January.
