MALKERNS – Seasoned rider Wandy Williams is the National Dressage champion.

Williams, who boasts over 40 years horse riding experience, made a stop on the podium for the umpteenth time to claim gold in yesterday’s national championships staged at Nyanza Stables in Malkerns. Riding her Little Wonder horse, Williams once again flawlessly performed from memory a series of prearranged dressage movements to be named the adult national champion. “It was an exciting competition. “It was interesting that a lot of children were introduced to the sport,” said the proud champion. As it is standard practice in dressage events, the riders demonstrated prescribed series of movements within a standard arena. There were local and two South African judges who evaluated each movement on the basis of an objective standard appropriate to the level of the test and assigned each movement a score from zero to 10. A score of nine was very good.

Meanwhile, the equally impressive Chloe Thorne was the national junior champion while the outstanding Pony Rider accolade went to Ayanda Beneus, 10. The ever-shining Nandi Williams, who was the preliminary adult category winner, was among the notable podium finishers. About 20 enthusiastic riders demonstrated before the judges. Swaziland National Equestrian Federation Secretary Justine Martin was all smiles on the success of the event, highlighting that the standard was high. “We thank Inyanza Stables for the venue. It was a good event overall,” she said. The next event will be the show jumping championships to be staged at Swazi Lizkhar outside Lobamba from December 9 until the following day.
